Well, hello, October. You're the month that finally commits.
September kept us guessing — one day summer, one day a jacket, back and forth like it couldn't decide. October doesn't do that. October shows up, closes the door on summer for good, and says "we're doing this now." The light goes gold and low in the afternoons. The air actually smells like something. And every single evening gets a little greedier about taking the daylight back.
Here's what October looks like at Granny's: garlic goes in the ground mid-month, tucked into the cold dirt to do its quiet work all winter so it can erupt the second spring arrives. The fireplace gets its first real fire of the season — not because it's desperately needed yet, but because there's something about that first crackle that makes the whole house feel like it's settling in for the long haul right along with us. The canning pace finally slows from a sprint to a walk, which, after September, is its own kind of relief.
It's also, if I'm honest, my favorite kind of busy. The frantic harvest-everything-right-now energy of late summer gives way to something steadier — stacking wood, sorting what's left in the garden, watching the whole place quiet down on purpose instead of all at once. October doesn't ask you to race it. October just asks you to get ready.
So welcome, October. The garlic's waiting, the fireplace's waiting, and so is a very good sweater I haven't worn since last year.
What does October look like at your place? I'd love to hear it.
