Every week I see people post their Costco haul, and today felt like the right day to compete. Behold: my Sunday grocery run, produced entirely by walking twenty feet outside in my pajamas.
On the menu: garlic, onions, tomatoes in every color the plant felt like making, peppers, a wagon full of zucchini and acorn squash that apparently formed a union overnight, and — drumroll — the very first horseradish root of the season, finally making its debut after months of just being a leafy promise.
I'd like to say there was a system to this harvest. There was not. It was more of a "grab everything that looks ready, form an opinion about it later" situation. Somewhere in there my supervisor showed up to inspect the goods — one dog, very committed to quality control, mostly interested in whether any of it was edible on the spot.
No cart. No checkout line. No small talk with a cashier about the weather. Just a wagon, a basket, and a garden that apparently didn't get the memo that 2 people and a couple dogs can only eat so much squash.
Grocery bill: $0. Dignity: also questionable, given the pajama situation. Worth it.
