Every so often I open the canning cupboard just to look. Today I'm letting you look too.
This little white cupboard is the whole growing season, standing at attention. Pickles in every style I know how to make. Tomatoes diced and sauced and salsa'd. Carrots glowing orange on the top shelf. Jalapeños waiting for their moment. Sauerkraut doing its patient thing. Every jar in there was a plant in the dirt a few months ago — and before that, a seed and a hope and a prayer against the deer.
People ask why I do all this when the store is right there. And look, the store IS right there, and I'm glad for it. But the store can't sell you a jar with a whole summer inside it. That second shelf? That's the lake-weekend tomatoes. Those pickles? The cucumber ambush of late August. This cupboard isn't just food — it's a diary you can eat.
Here's the math that matters to me: on some gray February Tuesday, when the garden is under two feet of snow and the sun clocks out at 4:30, somebody in this house is going to open this cupboard, pull down a jar of summer, and dinner will taste like August. That's the whole reason. February-us says thank you, every single year.
The cupboard's not full yet — the salsa's still coming, and Elizabeth's squash doesn't need jars, just a cool corner. But it's getting there. One water bath at a time.
What's on YOUR shelves so far this season? You know I want to see it.
